HealthAware: An Integrated Health and Health Care Information Network

    Sandra Kogan, Robert A. Greenes

Decsion Systems Group Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School

HealthAware(TM) is an online, integrated resource for consumers which provides up-to-date information about health, wellness, and health care with linkage to a health care delivery network for problems that require further attention. Unlike other consumer health sites, this is a proactive resource for consumers linking together an interactive risk assessment tool, recommendations and referral. To implement these features, a component-based strategy was used in which a core set of tools has been implemented, and which provides flexibility and expandability, in terms of ease of adding future features. Editing tools are used to author and update content in module-specific database files. A distributed authoring/editing approach is used that facilitates editorial review and approval analogous to traditional publishing; upon editor approval, content is published in Web-accessible format. Dynamic page generation from the databases enables content to be managed without the need for a Webmaster, and ensures a consistent look and feel for presented pages. An evaluation project is underway using the Boston College campus as a testbed community, and linkage to Partners HealthCare System as the health care delivery network. Initial focus areas for the test bed include 55 topics in the following areas: breast disease, cardiovascular disease, sports injuries, substance abuse, pregnancy and prenatal care.

Interactions on Culture and Society in Modern France - A Digital Libray project
          through  CSCIE23

The library gathers 200 documents about the interactions on Culture and Society in Modern France. I tried to demonstrate the value added by a careful indexing and database design. The study of a dynamic topic (Interactions of Culture and Society) demonstrates the advantages of using a relational database environment. The library was built according to concepts drawn from results in cognitive psychology, neuro-science, ergonomics and information science. Semantics and cognitive methods were used to build intuitive search functions, queries and menus. The importance of a thoughtful indexing process was demonstrated, through Keywords creation and Indexing revolving around six topics: what, where, when, how, who, why.

Digital Audio's Multiple Personalities

   David Ackerman, Sarah Adams

   Loeb Music Library

This presentation offers a look at the role of digital technology in use at the Loeb Music Library for audio preservation and access to rare and fragile collections. Audio preservation issues that will be touched on include reformatting and restoration, sample rates and bit depth, and data storage. Plans for access to collections will look at the content design goals for research intensive digital resources that integrate audio recordings with their accompanying documentation (e.g. field notes) through a digital finding aid.

Multimedia in FAS Instruction

   Robert Doyle

Faculty of Arts and Sciences Divisions of Instructional Media Services(IMS) in FAS are providing multimedia support for instruction. Media & Technological Services (MTS) is involved with the Instructional Computing Group (ICG) in producing recordings for web-based instruction, the Language Resource Center provides digitized film, video, and audio class materials for foreign language courses, the Adaptive Technology Laboratory offers voice recognition programs, and Media Production Center(MPC) offers DAT and CD productions. IMS is actively using machinery provided through the Intel grant to meet the technology needs of our faculty.
